Yearning for morediversity and freedom in my work – and desire to sleep later – made me an entrepreneur

My career as a language specialist started in 1992 when I graduated with a master’s degree in translation studies from the University of Turku. My first job as a translator was in the service of the Military Attaché Office of the American Embassy, Helsinki, where I worked for 12 years.

During those years, I realised that I yearned for more freedom and diversity in my work. Furthermore, I absolutely hated getting up early in the morning to make it to the office by eight o’clock. These were among the key reasons that motivated me to set up my own business, Tavestra, in 2004. I took a leap of faith without knowing whether I had what it takes to be an entrepreneur, but 20 years later I must say that I have never regretted my decision.

My dream of a larger variety of topics has also come true. I have had the opportunity to translate very diverse texts from various fields. My clients have included companies, associations, public sector actors and private individuals. I have also done subcontracting for larger translation agencies. The sectors have ranged from industry, trade and business to state administration, research centres, educational institutions, and many others. As you can see, I really found the diversity I was looking for!

My favourite pastimes are writing, engaging in group exercise and Ireland

As a professional in putting words into text in another language, I’m interested in communication and writing also outside my work role. I enjoy reading what others have written and writing my own texts. Nothing has been published yet, but maybe one day…I’m an active member of the Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters (SKTL) and Nordic Editors and Translators (NEaT).

My regular hobbies are walking, cycling and engaging in group exercise. I have also always enjoyed taking photographs. Another keen interest of mine is Ireland. It’s been that way ever since I made my first trip there in 1999. I fell instantly in love with the Irish nature, seaside and people. Since then, I’ve made regular trips to Ireland and participated in the activities of the Finnish–Irish Society and various other events related to Ireland. Later, my interest also expanded to Scotland, but I haven’t visited it that often yet.
